Why Build a Watch Instead of Buying One?

There are plenty of good watches you can buy, put on your wrist, and never think much about what’s inside them.

We like doing the opposite.

Bexford started with an interest in the individual pieces that make a mechanical watch work — the movement, case, dial, hands, crystal, bezel, crown, and all the small decisions that determine how the finished watch feels.

Once you start looking at watches that way, buying one off the shelf isn’t the only option anymore.

You Get to Choose What Matters

Every production watch is a collection of compromises.

Maybe you like the dial but not the bracelet. Maybe the case is right but you wish it had a sapphire crystal. Maybe you love the overall design but would rather have a different movement or handset.

Building changes that.

Instead of accepting the complete package, you can start with the parts you care about and work outward from there.

That doesn’t mean throwing every interesting component into one watch. Usually, the best builds are the ones where everything feels like it belongs together.

The Movement Is Only the Beginning

We use mechanical movements such as the NH35 and NH34 because they’re proven, serviceable, and supported by a huge range of compatible components.

But the movement doesn’t define the entire watch.

Case proportions change how it wears. A dial can completely change its character. Hand length matters. Crystal shape matters. Even something as simple as the crown can affect how finished the watch feels.

Those details are a big part of why we enjoy building.

There’s Something Different About Knowing What’s Inside

A mechanical watch is already a strange object by modern standards.

It doesn’t need a battery. It doesn’t need an app. Inside the case is a collection of gears, springs, wheels, and tiny mechanical components working together to measure time.

Building one makes that mechanism less abstract.

You see how the movement fits into the case. You install the dial and hands. You understand why tolerances matter and why something being off by a fraction of a millimeter can become a problem.

You stop seeing the watch as one object and start seeing how the object was made.

Building Doesn’t Mean Reinventing Everything

We’re not trying to manufacture every screw, gear, and case ourselves.

That’s not the point.

Bexford works with existing movements and carefully selected components, then assembles, checks, and tests the finished watches.

It’s closer to building a machine from a good set of proven parts.

And because we sell components too, someone who would rather build their own can start with many of the same kinds of parts we use.

Why We Keep Doing It

Mostly because watches are fun.

There’s always another combination to try, another movement to learn, or some small detail that can be improved on the next build.

Sometimes the result becomes a Bexford watch.

Sometimes an idea doesn’t work nearly as well in person as it did in our heads.

That’s part of it too.

We’ll keep sharing both the watches and more of what goes into building them here in the Journal.

Because for us, the interesting part isn’t just what ends up on the wrist.

It’s how it got there.
